ITIL Intermediate Courses – How do I choose?

The AXELOS ITIL Intermediate Level and the courses on offer has caused much confusion for students around the world who are looking to further their ITIL Foundation knowledge and certification, or gain credits on their way to becoming an ITIL Expert through either a CLOUD-Trainer (Online) or Classroom based programme. (A minimum of 22 credits is required to achieve ITIL Expert certification).

The ITIL Intermediate Level consists of the ITIL Practitioner course and two “streams” namely, the lifecycle stream and the capability stream. Within each stream a selection of intermediate courses exist for you to choose from:

  • ITIL Lifecycle (Management) Courses – Five courses and respective examinations in total. Each exam passed awards you with 3 credits towards ITIL Expert.
  • ITIL Capability (Operational) Courses – Four courses and respective examinations in total. Each exam passed awards you with 4 credits towards ITIL Expert.

Fox ITSM has created a concise, easy to read table below to enable you to understand the difference between the two streams, the courses on offer within the ITIL Intermediate Level and the value they can add to you and your organisation.

ITIL Practitioner CourseITIL® Practitioner Course Addressing the demand from ITSM practitioners and organizations of all sizes worldwide, the ITIL Practitioner course and exam will equip ITSM professionals with added practical guidance to enhance leveraging ITIL in line with their organizations’ business and customer goals.
Capability StreamLifecycle Stream
Focus:The Capability Stream (and courses) focus on the practical execution and improvement of ITIL processes with detailed inputs/outputs and activities covered for each process. They focus primarily on the Operational aspects of ITIL processes.

The Processes within each course have been bundled into logical groups to illustrate the relationships with each other and their core objective i.e. To operationally support IT Services and analyze the results (OSA Course).

The Capability Courses will not address processes based on the ITIL Life-cycle stages they enable as with the Life-cycle Stream Courses.

If you are responsible for operationally managing, improving or performing any process related activities within an operational context, then this is the Stream for you.
The Life-cycle Stream (and courses) focus on the governance and management of an entire ITIL life-cycle stage, such as process relationships, roles and responsibilities and ongoing improvement. They focus primarily on the Management aspects of ITIL processes.

The Processes within each course have been bundled into logical groups to illustrate the process required to effectively govern and manage an ITIL Service Life-cycle Stage i.e. Service Strategy, Design etc.

The Life-cycle Courses address processes based on the ITIL Life-cycle stages they enable.

If you are responsible for governing, managing, implementing, improving or growing the capability of Life-cycle stages within your organization then this is the Stream for you.
Target Audience:Process owners and managers responsible for the ongoing operation and improvement of processes.
